Novel Spin-Based Building Blocks for Advanced TeraHertz Applications

Deliverables

Characterization of the first generation pulsed THz emitters

Characterization of a first generation of active metallic THz emitters based on transition metal/heavy metal bilayers (typically Co/Pt bilayers) using terahertz time domain spectroscopy (TDS) with detected fields equivalent or larger to standard electro-optical materials. The output performances will be characterized in both reflection and transmission modes over the spectral bandwidth of the TDS system. The optimal parameters in terms of emitter growth, excitation powers and pulse width will be investigated.

Characterization of the first generation CW THz emitters

Building on the findings of D12 and continuing that work this report will give a detailed account of the characterization of continuouswave operation of the first generation of sTHz emitters by ultrafast photomixing of two detuned IR lasers The output performances will be investigated as a function of operation mode excitation power material system growth conditions etc CW emission beyond 2 THz is targeted with power levels that can be a stepping stone towards the levels needed for communication purposes at carrier frequencies beyond 24 THz

Characterization of spin-torque based structures for detectors

To understand the requirements for spintronic systems that can be used for emission and detection of THz the structural and magnetic properties will be characterized This includes in particular as the deliverable the information on the growth of the layers including the used parameters and the resulting structure such as crystallinity interface and surface properties etc For the magnetic characterization the typical characteristics will be provided including saturation magnetization anisotropies possible multilayer coupling strengths and measured spin torques

Experimental demonstration of novel spin-based THz ellipsometry configuration

We will report on the demonstration of ellipsometric measurement configuration with spin-sensitive THz components. Complete Mueller (Jones) matrix will be measured based on the switching of selected polarization states by spin reorientation and precise calibration procedure. The report will include demonstration of THz ellipsometric spectra measurement on typical isotropic/anisotropic samples including the analysis of experimental errors.

Performance assessment of polarization and modulation control

This report will summarize experimental results on the polarization properties and the parameters of emitted light from spintronic THz devices. The THz light polarization switching and modulation, by external magnetic field, will be tested and the polarization accuracy and stability will be measured as a function of various polarization state and emitter architecture. Parameters for different polarization states will be reported.

Report on ab-initio modelling for spin-based THz emitters

We report on ab-initio calculations of the decisive materials’ quantities (e.g. spin-Hall and Rashba-Edelstein coefficients), and the study of symmetry-breaking effect at interfaces (e.g. Fe/Bi) and in selected AFMs (e.g. Mn2Au, CuMnAs without inversion symmetry) that lead to spin-to-charge conversion. Further we report modelling of superdiffusive spin currents for spin-based THz emitters.

Report on the demodulation specifications

This report will give an account of the experimental and theoretical work during the first 3 project years to demonstrate the feasibility of spin-based heterostructures as wide-band THz receivers. The objectives are to demonstrate demodulation of any modulated THz signal using spin physics. The Report will follow the structure of the detectors demonstrated in T2.1-3 and for each of them investigate bandwidth, responsivity, noise characteristics (NEP, noise figure, …), etc. An outlook will be presented to the use of the spin technology in THz links.

Creation of the website and the logo of the project and putting on line of the website.

Set-up the Data Management Plan (DMP)

The consortium will exhaustively explain the management of their data. The objective is to set up common practices so that the consortium and later on related communities can share their results in a simple and direct fashion. The consortium will update its data policy regarding the evolvement of the EU Open Science Cloud (EOSC37) initiative for FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data.
