PLATform for Operation of distribution NEtworks

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - PlatOne (PLATform for Operation of distribution NEtworks)

Période du rapport: 2021-03-01 au 2022-02-28

To manage energy transition, DSOs require innovative tools. Volatile renewable energy sources in combination with less predictable consumption patterns call for higher levels of grid observability and exploitation of flexibility. While these two challenges are traditionally treated with separate means, Platone proposes an innovative approach to a joint data management for both. Fully respecting the existing regulatory framework, a layered set of platforms will allow to meet the needs of system operators, aggregators and end users. A blockchain-based platform is the access layer to generators’ and customers’ flexibilities and breaks traditional access barriers by providing certified measurements to all the players. Certified data and signals will be used for an innovative DSO platform to locally maintain system integrity fostering confidence in flexibility operations. An upper layer will implement a new concept of blockchain-based open market platform to link the local system to the TSO domains and enhance the overall system cost efficiency. Because flexibility means customer involvement, Platone puts the grid users at the centre, investigates their needs and expectations and uses the underlying blockchain to unlock the potentials of higher dynamics of response. The Platone Open Framework will be tested in 3 large pilots in Europe and analysed in cooperation with a large research initiative in Canada. Thanks to strategic partnerships and a unique consortium structure with an excellent network, Platone can offer an unprecedented effort of dissemination and exploitation with focus on DSO experts and final users.
Based on requirements gathered from the demos, the first version of the Platone Open Framework has been designed and implemented as a fully replicable and scalable system to enable distribution grid flexibility/congestion management mechanisms based on P2P market models with actors at all levels (DSOs, TSOs, Customers, Aggregators). It includes 3 platforms: Platone Market Platform, Platone DSO Technical Platform and Platone Blockchain Access Layer (which includes two main components, Platone Blockchain Access Platform and Platone Shared Customer Database. The work has concentrated on the definition of the Italian, German and Greek demos’ use cases and KPIs and on the design of the architecture based on using a common framework for distribution grid management and its application in 3 field trials. The first release of the Platone Open Framework is publicly available and released as open source and the second implementation phase has started. Equipment has been installed in customer premises in the Italian and German demos and customers have been involved in the testing activities.
The relevant legislative and regulatory framework and the standardisation ecosystem have been analysed. Suitable solutions, gaps and recommendations have been produced. Standardised grid models have been constructed.
The Scalability and Replicability Analysis methodology has been defined and suitable use cases identified. The SRA scenarios have been validated and the reference networks described. The Cost-Benefit Analysis methodology development has been completed and applied to a large percentage of the Demo Use Cases.
Customers have been recruited with to participate in the field trials in Italy, Germany and Greece.
The Platone Open Framework expands the SOGNO architecture to integrate market and customer aspects based on blockchain technology. The SOGNO architecture has been accepted as a project in the Linux Foundation Energy (LFE). Platone will further exploit the possible growth of SOGNO in LFE and the corresponding new services.
Platone has been extremely active in the BRIDGE working groups. The Platone open-source Use Case Repository has been developed and adopted by the Data Management Working group as the way to store Use Cases for all H2020 projects. Platone has also been leading the work in the Regulation working group by providing an updated version of the HEMRM (Harmonized Electricity Market Role Models) document.
The cooperation with Canada has been established.
Platone advances automation as a service and intelligence decentralisation through providing an innovative mechanism of customer inclusion using blockchain technology and a seamless integration of market and operation never considered at DSO level before. Instead of treating new market functions as a superimposed infrastructure in the DSO operation, Platone provides an integrated and coordinated approach. The main innovation produced by Platone is the Platone Open Framework, an open source software package supported by the Linux Foundation Energy (LFE) The Platone Open Framework implements a data acquisition system based on a two-layer approach (access layer for customer and DSO observability layer) that allows greater stakeholder involvement and enables an efficient and smart network management. It uses Digital Ledger Technology for transparent multi-party data sharing. Open APIs allow the integration of services by third parties and including customers’ appliances as a critical source of flexibility. The innovation is to develop services not only to meet the DSOs’ needs but also the customers’ expectations. Use of energy storage decouples the grid from the customer, so that flexibility can be offered without impact on the privacy or daily life of the customers. All stakeholders can access certified and almost real-time data, enabling
• an almost real time observability of the grid for the DSO;
• customers to have access to their consumption data and increased levels of participation in a local flexibility market, as well as day-ahead and balancing markets through the DSO;
• aggregation of medium and low voltage customers to provide flexibility services to TSO/DSO, without any investment in ad hoc measurement systems;
• the creation of a local flexibility market for flexibility services supply at the distribution level, led by the DSOs and validated by the blockchain technology.
• transparent and tamper-proof data collection and data sharing.
All these characteristics, together with the usage of standards data models (e.g. CIM) and standard interfaces and communication protocols, make the Platone Open Framework highly integrable and reusable. The integration and deployment in three different trials, each based on different use cases and scenarios, will allow us to validate and improve the framework and the different platforms in the next stages.
The future development of the DSO Technical Platform outside Platone has been secured by its acceptance into the Linux Foundation Energy in December 2020, supporting synthesis with similar activities around the world and use of a service-oriented, API-driven architecture.
Data Driven State Estimation extracts extra knowledge from the available measurements, using past measurements to deduce pseudo-measurements and identify corrupted data, enhancing its usefulness and reliability.
Dynamic distribution’s use-of-system tariffs drives network costs down by utilizing available flexibility. Data analytics and machine learning assist in the enhancement of the efficacy of such tariffs.
Phasor Measurement Units will be improved and deployed for real time grid monitoring of the network and will be ready for large-scale deployment at the end of the project.
