Requirements Engineering Adaptation and Improvement for Safety and Dependability

Objetivo

The RE-AIMS project aims to develop, apply and evaluate an industrially viable requirements engineering process adaptation and improvement strategy specifically targeted at safety-critical and dependable applications. The project will integrate existing knowledge from a wide range of fields into a constructive process modelling approach supported by technologies for designing dependable and assessable requirements engineering activities.

The project's approach is to implement process adaptations in leading edge safety-critical applications development in the aviation and railway sectors. The process model will contain process assessment techniques that permit the improvement to be evaluated. The improvement should have a high impact on safety. The results will then be exploited by the applications developers in their following development programmes.

The aviation application's perspective on requirements engineering will see it as the capture of experience relative to safety issues and then generating requirements to improve product safety. This perspective is motivated by the many "users" of the application such as operators maintenance staff, pilots, passengers, airlines, air traffic control, airport authorities and certification authorities and the many sources of information from them. It also emphasises the concurrent engineering nature of modern aircraft development and the systems view of the aircraft and its avionics.

The railway application emphasises the suppliers' perspective of safety related requirements engineering in an applications development. It tackles the problems of rigorous communication with external experts in the signalling domain, formalising internal knowledge of requirements and making a more systematic transition to formal design methods. It will lead to more dependable and reusable requirements specifications and products. It will emphasise links to, or extensions of, the B-method of software development.

In addition, the project will package the support technologies and applications experience within a Requirements Engineering Adaptation and Improvement framework. The package will contain specification for the REAIMS process model and maturity framework. There will be a series of modules that contain applications guidelines on specific aspects. These results will then be exploited by the service companies.

The project results will be exploited by the product divisions of the applications developers in their future developments in the form of improved Systems Engineering processes. The service companies will commercialise the REAIMS package as part of their product offerings in the safety-critical and related markets in Europe. The results will also be presented in the form of a recommendation for RAMS related standards.
