Project description
A new app to measure asbestos levels
Once hailed as a magical material, asbestos was a first-choice for countless industrial and commercial applications until research identified asbestos as a dangerous carcinogen. While its production was banned in the European Union in 2005, it continues to pose a threat. Asbestos-infected buildings and workplaces remain a significant health risk. The EU-funded PUMP3M2D project will significantly boost efforts to check asbestos-infected buildings. Worldwide Laboratory Testing Services, the French company behind the project, has developed a smart pump to measures asbestos levels in the air. This device can be controlled remotely with a smartphone by downloading an app.
Objective
Asbestos is an element seriously harmful to health, causing long-term diseases, especially respiratory ones. Although its use in the EU has been banned since 2005, there are many old buildings likely to contain asbestos and be a source of danger to people, especially building maintenance workers. In addition, asbestos-related diseases result in a huge amount of healthcare costs each year and a comparable number of fatalities to car accidents.
WLTS is a French company based in Grenoble with nearly 20 years of experience in the sampling and analysis of asbestos in the air and materials. It is an entity accredited by COFRAC, French accreditation body, and characterized by its rigor and independence. The most significant customers are asbestos removal companies.
WLTS has developed PUMP3M2D, a smart pump to measure the level of asbestos in the air, equipped with an electronic card that allows its remote control through iOS / Android Apps. This pump allows an improvement and simplification of the sampling process, avoiding the displacement of the technical staff to the worksites anywhere in the world and their exposure to asbestos.
PUMP3M2D will be a disruptive revolution in the market of sampling and will provide a competitive advantage with the competitors, it will allow to carry out the internationalization of the company, achieving a ROI of 3.42 and 19 new employees in 3 years.
