Upscaling production and adding new product lines to the unique and patented water-to-mist technology that reduces water use by 98% without loss of functionality and keeping a high user experience

Project description

Spreading the use of water-saving technology

With climate change and water scarcity posing increasing threats to the majority of the world’s population, many are searching for ways to conserve large amounts of water. With this in mind, Swedish company Altered was able to develop a novel technology using funding acquired through Kickstarter: a nozzle allowing for the same washing experience utilising up to 98 % less water while also allowing for a switch to normal spraying. The EU-funded MistAndClean project will build on this patent and develop three new technologies based on it: a cheaper plastic alternative, a fixed faucet for kitchens and bathrooms, and showerheads. This would allow us to save large amounts of water every day.

Objective

By 2023, about half of the world’s population will live in areas without enough water for basic needs. Altered is making water saving as easy as possible with a full range of water-saving products for all types of water use and all budgets. For our first development we have spent nearly €1.5M to bring to the market a radical technology: a patented nozzle that transforms a gushing flow into a dense, high-speed mist using up to 98% less water than existing taps, while maintaining the same washing experience with the option to switch to spray mode for a higher flow when needed. We are working together with distributors and retailers to offer something different from traditional companies by turning components no one knows about, into beautiful, easy to use, durable, versatile products fitting for every budget and every tap. Thanks to a viral Kickstarter campaign video with over +50 million views we have secured the sales of our first 60K units, our first partnerships with large corporates like Ikea and Unilever and an endorsement from WWF which have set us on our way to help solve the global water crisis, contribute to energy savings and offset carbon emissions. We are seeking €1.62M for Mist&Clean, making the way for three new developments based on our current technology: 1) a cheaper, plastic version of our current devices 2) a fixed faucet for new bathrooms and kitchens and 3) showerheads so that our innovative water saving technology can be put to use in every household, hotel, restaurant, airport and public space. The successful completion of Mist&Clean will allow us to grow our share of the faucet market and tap into the showerhead segment for the first time, a total addressable market (TAM) in the EU alone of 1.83B units. A mere year after the commercialization of these new developments, we expect that they will contribute over €18M in revenue to Altered, setting the stage for our company to be leaders in water conservation.
