Non-contact precision measurement system for structural health monitoring

Project description

An innovative digital measurement system for structural and geotechnical monitoring

Inspection of old buildings and structures, especially those in public use, is mandatory to ensure safety and prevention of damage and injuries or deaths in case of collapse. Old buildings are vulnerable to extreme environmental events such as earthquakes or strong winds. However, due to high cost, frequent monitoring is not possible and often not reliable enough. The EU-funded VG360 project will offer a new innovative digital device that is a viable solution: a non-contact measurement system for structural and geotechnical engineering projects. It will reduce costs and time of monitoring, increase versatility and precision during the examination of structures.

Objective

The monitoring of structures is one of the ultimate challenges to engineering companies today. Ageing and increasing
number of extreme events (e.g. earthquakes or strong wind) are degrading the long-term performance of the structures. A
collapse or closure of structure can lead to chaos, significant financial losses, and, in some cases, heavy casualties. The
recent collapse of the Morandi bridge (Genoa, Italy) due to ageing structures and poor maintenance led to 43 deaths and
€600 million loss. Whereas, a single-lane closure of the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland due to the safety risk caused a
€734k loss daily. Unfortunately, the current solutions are expensive, slow and unreliable, leading to ineffective monitoring
and reduced number of analysis. In Italy, only ¼ of the schools have been examined for the seismic resistance. The
currently adopted techniques request the installation of permanent devices on the structure to be monitored, implying: high
installation and monitoring costs, time-consuming monitoring and low versatility.
VG360 is a digital non-contact measurement system for the structural monitoring of large structures and geotechnical
engineering projects.
During the feasibility assessment, a minimum viable product will be defined, a go-to-market strategy and a supply chain will
be established, as well as further development plan will be drafted. Within the overall innovation project, Imetrum needs to
customise VG360 for two different RTS applications; setup a production line; and carry out 6-month pilot with three secured
civil engineering companies leading to the system validation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

SME-1 - SME instrument phase 1

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Coordinator

IMETRUM LTD
Net EU contribution

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
