Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The unprecedent growth of data produced by IoT devices and the increased need of processing it close to its origin is fuelling the demand of edge computing solutions. Current approaches are not sufficient to address this forthcoming massive usage of edge computing, especially in the frame of large IoT deployments in smart cities and industrial applications.
Pledger delivers a new architectural paradigm and a toolset that paves the way for this next generation of edge computing infrastructures, tackling the modern challenges faced today and coupling the benefits of low latencies on the edge, with the robustness and resilience of cloud infrastructures. The toolset delivered enables:
• Edge Computing Providers to enhance the stability and performance effectiveness of their edge infrastructures through modelling the overheads and optimal groupings of concurrently running services, runtime analysis and adaptation, thus gaining a competitive advantage.
• Edge Computing Adopters to understand the computational nature of their applications, investigate abstracted and understandable QoS metrics, facilitate trust and smart contracting over their infrastructures and identify how they can balance their cost and performance to optimise their competitiveness and monitor their SLAs.
• Third parties to act as independent validators of QoS features in IoT applications, enabling new decentralised applications and business models, thus filling a large gap in the emerging edge/IoT market landscape.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Technical work in project is split in two main iterations:
IT-1 for developing the first version of the Pledger core components, with basic functionalities.
IT-2 for developing the final version of the Pledger core components, with all foreseen functionalities available, integrated in the core platform and validate through the project use cases.
During the first iteration, and according to the project timeplan, most of the work has been performed on the research side, rather than on the development one. In this period, 15 deliverables were produced, and 4 more are ongoing that will include more core components. This result into 11 available individual assets and 4 joint ones that will be soon released into a public repository under an open source license scheme.
During the second iteration the work focused on developing the latest functionalities and the integration of all components into the Pledger core platform, through the three project use cases. Everything documented in the second iteration of technical deliverables. Additional activities related to project dissemination and exploitation were performed in order to attract stakeholders.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Digital transformation is more than the sum up of digitisation and digitalisation. It is about connecting people and devices, allowing human interaction, consuming technology and changing the business culture. And Pledger aims to leverage European industry providing means to support them on their digital transformation process.
For doing this, Pledger introduces innovative architectural elements related to coupling cloud and edge computing capabilities with each other, enhancing cloud and edge services behaviour measurability, monitoring and predictability, and achieving higher levels of trust in open trustless edge/fog infrastructures by coupling them with related blockchain technologies.
Pledger also provides a set of benchmarks to allow end users to compare the benefits of the proposed solution with other existing applications. Everything demonstrated through three real-world use cases: manufacturing, mixed reality and smart cities.
Additional work involving ML and AI algorithms was also developed to, e.g. set the basis for predictive maintenance or be more energy efficient.
