In recent years, the food industry has experienced significant changes, with increased emphasis on food safety due to numerous scandals and health concerns. Consequently, internationally recognized food safety standards have been implemented through the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), and governments have enacted stricter policies and regulations, such as the European Commission's integrated Food Safety policy and the US Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The agri-food and grocery sector now face greater pressure to ensure supplier compliance with GFSI-recognized food safety standards, necessitating secure and timely exchange of critical data related to food safety assessment and assurance among supply chain stakeholders.
The Food Safety Market (TheFSM) project has developed an industrial data platform that revolutionizes food certification in Europe. This platform creates an open and collaborative virtual environment that facilitates the exchange of critical information among food safety actors. TheFSM Platform and TheFSM Applications have helped digitize essential stages in the food certification process, simplifying procedures and increasing efficiency for certification bodies.
Objective A: To understand in depth the needs of critical business scenarios on food safety specifications and translate them into detailed technical, organisational, legal and commercial requirements for TheFSM platform.
Objective B: To develop both the backbone and the front-end services of TheFSM platform so that it may fully support secured and controlled data sharing workflows and transactions critical to inspection and certification
The project implemented and deployed fully-functional versions of TheFSM platform and its three applications (Foodakai 2.0 Agrivi 2.0 and Food Inspector). The features of the applications were designed based on the feedback collected from WP6 pilots and updated requirements from WP1.
Objective C: To set up pilots where food companies and their supply chain stakeholders will test, improve and drive the adoption of the data platform and the linked software tools. Τhe project conducted three pilot iterations involving over 125 participants from 10 countries and 9 food sectors. Feedback was collected from pilots and shared with development teams, and the pilot methodology was updated. The user interface was equipped with a localization framework, and the three applications were tested in different pilot countries.
Objective D: To design, implement and validate a commercial strategy that will drive the adoption of TheFSM from certification bodies inside the consortium and other stakeholders around the world.
Work outcome: TheFSM project requirements (i.e. business, legal, technical and data requirements), which formed the basis of the main functionalities of TheFSM platform and applications.
Related progress in the Reporting Period: During the first part of the reporting period (M19-M25), the primary objective was to update the requirements of the applications based on the findings from the first cycle of Pilots. The focus was on fulfilling the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and ensuring that the applications aligned with the Project Validated Requirements in line with end-users' prioritization.
Work outcome: Deliver an open industrial-grade data platform that facilitates the exchange and monetisation of sensitive data between different food safety actors

Core Platform: This reporting period’s focus was on designing and specifying the open and shared reference architecture of the data platform. The updated version of TheFSM architecture served as the building blocks of the platform.
Related progress in the Reporting Period: Our main objective during the reporting period was to design and develop new features for TheFSM applications, integrating the suggestions and feedback gathered from the WP6 pilots, as reflected in D6.2 and the updated requirements of WP1, as reflected in the updates of D1.1. From M19-M24, WP4 activities focused on testing the beta version of TheFSM applications through WP6 pilots, enhancing the agile deployment approach by adding a more detailed and robust process for identifying, reporting, and correcting software bugs, iteratively developing new features based on focus groups' findings and WP1 requirements, creating the beta version of TheFSM applications (MS5), achieving and testing the interconnection of TheFSM applications through TheFSM platform API Gateway.
Work outcome: Piloting of certification processes and use of FSM applications in real-world scenarios
Related progress in the Reporting Period: During the reporting period, the consortium made significant progress towards the objective of piloting TheFSM platform and applications in real-world scenarios. The three pilot iterations involved more than 125 unique participants across 10 countries and 9 food sectors, providing valuable feedback for further development of the platform.
Work outcome: Impact Generation through targeted dissemination activities
Related progress in the Reporting Period: Overall, the project's dissemination strategy has been highly effective in reaching a diverse range of stakeholders and generating significant impact. The focus on high-quality content tailored to the needs of specific personas has ensured that TheFSM's message has been well received and that the project has been able to establish itself as a thought leader in the food safety and certification space.
Progress Beyond the State of the Art - Enabling Digital Solutions for Holistic Coverage of Food Certification: TheFSM's comprehensive list of requirements (business, data, technical, legal) for the digitization of GFSI certifications has gone beyond the state of the art by infusing order into the complex, multi-actor domain of food certifications.
Progress Beyond the State of the Art - TheFSM Platform: An Integrated Solution for Handling Sensitive Data in the Food Supply Chain: Progress Beyond the State of the Art: TheFSM has developed an open industrial-grade data platform that offers all the necessary robust controls and decentralised processes for handling sensitive data and allowing their exchange and monetisation between different food safety actors.
Progress Beyond the State of the Art - TheFSM Applications: Advancing Food Safety and Certification Processes: TheFSM has developed a suite of interconnected applications, including Food Inspector, FOODAKAI 2.0 and Agrivi 2.0 that exchange data through TheFSM Platform to enable advanced functionalities such as real-time information sharing for certifications and remote risk assessments of supplier and farm management.Progress Beyond the State of the Art - Automated and Smart Contracts for Food Safety Data Transactions:
Progress Beyond the State of the Art - Real-Time Processing and Big Data Storage & Visualisation: TheFSM incorporated big data indexing, processing and visualisation capabilities to support real-time data processing and food risk model execution, as well as prediction models for audit non-conformities.
Progress Beyond the State of the Art – Novel, User-Friendly Food Safety Data Marketplace: TheFSM has also developed the Food Safety Market, a user-friendly web app built on top of TheFSM Platform. This app allows non-expert users to directly exchange and monetize data in a simple and user-friendly manner.
