Objective
Oil and gas are generated in source rocks, often organic-rich mudstones or shales, and migrate to reservoirs. The project will test and apply a method to identify past or present oil generation in shales from clay mineralogical parameters, supplemented by organic pyrolysis (Rock-Eval). The project will demonstrate that this methodology will allow quantification of the oil generation also in areas where uncertainties of this parameter so far has increased risk of exploration. The presence of oil or gas source rocks having generated oil or gas in commercial quantities is a limiting factor in oil geological basins. By increasing the success of drilling the number of exploration wells and thus the number of possible sites for pollution from the drilling and the negative effects of drilling in populated areas is minimized. For the EU, oil and gas are scarce and vital resources which according to forecasts will decrease in production during the next decades.
