YOUR LIFE. HANDS-ON.

Project description

Smart, electromechanical glove to the rescue

Strokes, arthritis or injury are common causes of hand disability or functional impairment. For millions of people, it means reduced mobility and inability to perform activities in daily life. Rehabilitation treatments are not always successful. The EU-funded NUADA project is developing a smart innovative glove that can help restore hand strength and coordination. It contains electronic tendons that can help the hand open and close and perform basic motions. Designed to be energy efficient, very light and strong, it does not reduce sensitivity but protects from injuries, making it suitable for rehabilitation applications.

Objective

According to the World Heart Foundation there are 15 million new cases of stroke per year worldwide and 50 million people in the USA suffering from arthritis. Adding to this, repetitive-stress job injuries account for around 30% of doctor diagnosed MSDs.
The addressed need represents an immense opportunity to help compensate the disability effects in the function of hand manipulation. The NUADA glove has the potential to be used both as an injury prevention equipment as well as functional support system and even on rehabilitation treatments.
Nuada’s solution relies mostly on energy efficient and lightweight components, created to deal with heavy weight support while maintaining touch sensitivity and a non-intrusive relation with the users’ body. With an ergonomic and small design and with an extended life battery, Nuada can be used in everyday life with comfort and discretion. Nuada looks like a simple glove, but if you look closer, it has special built-in tendons that support the hand when required. This is possible by connecting the artificial tendons to a patented, specially designed system that is worn on the users’ wrist.
Our glove is lighter, smaller, cheaper and more intelligent and energy efficient than currently available alternatives. The whole system is on the glove and bracelet, not needing battery backpacks. It is also stronger than others, supporting up to 40kg.
The most directly competing solutions are electromechanical gloves. They are an emergent market with two players with relatively successful developments so far: SEM glove and NASA/GM. When compared with these currently existing alternatives, NUADA differentiates itself due to having a smaller volume, much smaller energy needs, more support, and a more competitive pricing (about ¼ of the price) that results in much better value-for-money for users.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
