Hypertext Quality Information System (HYQIS) is a computer software tool designed to collect, store and analyse quality-related information. HYQIS collates information from different areas of the business, such as marketing, design or production. Once entered, information can be ordered and weighted, and priorities calculated. The process enables identification of the quality attributes of a product that are most important to customers, and facilitates benchmarking against rival products. HYQIS can help an organization identify the priorities for improving its product or service quality. The HYQIS methodology is based on quality function deployment (QFD); one of the few existing tools that can build relationships between information that is structured (eg technical specifications) and unstructured (eg customer preferences). Information is stored as a series of single data elements, which can be assembled by the user in a number of ways. The initial tool is a function for listing information (both single and multiple forms are available). A tree function enables hierarchical structures to be developed. Data can be entered into a tree on its own or as a list, there is no limit as to how many times a list item can be used. The matrix function uses two trees as inputs. The user specifies the relation between different tree elements in the resulting grid. An additional automatrix function allows the same tree to be used twice as a matrix, thus correlating the tree with itself. The final tool is the analysis function that enables results of the matrix to be exported to Excel spreadsheets, enabling further use of the data.
