MULTIMEDIA AND GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM BASED TOURISM APPLICATIONS AUTHORING SYSTEM

Objective

The main objective of MAGIC TOUR is to develop a multimedia and spatially-oriented Authoring System to support the automatic low cost generation of electronic applications for tour operators, tourist bureaus and travel agencies.

In order to validate the authoring tool in different situations corresponding to real life problems, the MAGIC TOUR project will include a second part in which the Authoring System will be tested and validated. The test will be conducted developing three typical kinds of tourism application prototypes. The three applications, also used as demonstrators to support dissemination and promotional activities, will constitute an additional main objective of the project. The three applications are:

- an electronic application prototype for a tour operator (LOOK, France).
- an electronic application prototype for a region tourist bureau (Sicily, Italy)
- a consultation and reservation system prototype for a travel agent (ravel Plan, Greece)

From a commercial point of view, the availability of an Authoring System specifically designed to develop tourism application will allow to increase the competitiveness of the partners due to the significant reduction of development costs.
From a technical point of view, the major project objective is the integration of the multimedia and GIS technology. This will allow to provide the final user of tourist application with new classes of functionalities based on vector data (i.e. route optimisation, proximity calculus, etc), in addition to the usual multimedia functionalities. Optimised itineraries satisfying specific user needs will be calculated and proposed to the user through an advanced graphical interface.
