Infection detection in human semen

Project description

A simple test may help some couples overcome infertility

Infertility affects at least 15 % of couples worldwide (about 50 million couples). In many cases, difficulty getting pregnant is related to male health. Male reproductive issues are responsible for one third of cases and another third are due to both male and female problems or unknown factors. Anaerobic bacteria in semen may play a role in some cases. They are part of the normal flora of human skin and mucosal membranes but can invade other areas, and infections in human semen are currently difficult to detect. DetectInMen has developed a simple and easy-to-use method to identify asymptomatic anaerobic bacterial infection in semen, offering a chance at conception with a simple treatment of antibiotics for some couples experiencing infertility.

Objective

Increasing reduced fertility of men is a globally growing problem. It remains unexplained in several cases. One possible reason, asymptotic anaerobe bacterial infection, which is hardly detectable by currently applied clinical practice. We developed an effective bacterial infection detection method for human semen. Our technology does not require cell culturing, makes possible direct sample analysis without pre-conditioning, and can detect anaerobic bacteria species without anaerobic sampling and processing. We aim to standardise our measurement protocol carry out a detailed clinical validation, to commercialise our technology for medical laboratory service providers and private andrology clinics. In this Phase 1 project we shall prepare for the clinical validation and make a comprehensive business plan to attract investors.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
