Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

In the global world that we live in, packages are everywhere, from mails, supermarkets, pharma to electronics. Grand scale packaging requires costly machines to assemble, fill, seal, label and code. A large part of the operational costs is related to pneumatic actuators, the core components that are in charge of moving and controlling a machine system. Pneumatic actuators are slow and very energy consuming, so their replacement with a more sustainable solution is widely considered a priority for the industrial world. KOMP-ACT wants to reduce the energy costs for the automation industry and its carbon footprint by up to 49 millions tons of CO2 per year introducing Modula, the world’s very first fully integrated electric actuators within the same price range and with the same dimensions and lightweight of pneumatics ones, but is also time-saving, energy efficient and programmable.

The Phase 1 project concerned the feasibility study:

- Definition of the Business Model
- Definition of Marketing & Commercialization Strategy
- Economic and Financial Projections

Technical Feasibility:
- Field tests
- Cost Benefit Analysis
- Definition of the Bill of Material

The field tests allowed us to validate the performances of our product. The business feasibility study allowed us to validate the profitability of our solution.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The introduction of Modula actuators to the market will bring both economic and environmental benefits:
- Economic benefits: Our end-users, which are packaging and food processing companies, will achieve great savings, as Modula will offer an increased productivity, a dramatic reduction of energy costs and will minimize the maintenance costs.- - Environmental benefits: Compared to standard pneumatic actuators, Modula actuators can reduce the energy consumption of a packaging machine up to 75%.
