Project description
Sensor-controlled, smart and flexible LED screens for any use
Digital displays, lighting and projections are all around us – at home and work, in public spaces, and in stadiums. These require constant improvements as their features are very limited by weight, shape possibilities, scalability or ease-of-use. LightnTec, a German company came up with the game-changing idea of a digital wallpaper, an ultra-thin, flat, light-weight, sensor-controlled and malleable thin film where walls become more than just physical space dividers. The EU-funded Digital Wallpaper project was initiated to further develop this product for both indoor and outdoor use and upscale it for commercialisation for a wide range of applications of audio-visual display, lighting and human centric lighting. This can be the ideal solution for ambient lighting, digital signage and LED-display markets.
Objective
There is a huge demand for dynamic, digital displays and lighting solutions of surfaces, indoor and outdoor. Façades, walls, floors, ceilings, not only in/on buildings, but also in the automotive and transportation segment are only some applications.
But state-of-the-art solutions are either limited to single colour lighting with no individual control of LED pixels, or they are expensive, heavy, limited in size, shape, curvature and difficult to install.
LightnTec is a leading innovator in Europe for light and its control on ultra-thin films and will exploit this business opportunity. LightnTec’s Digital Wallpaper is ultra-thin, malleable, flat, large in scale, applicable both indoors and outdoors, and digital – any size, any shape, any place, ultra-thin, ultra-lightweight. The technology offers wide-ranging application potential in ambient lighting, Human Centric Lighting, and illuminating surfaces on ceilings, walls and façades. With top level management experience from the market leaders like Barco, IMM and Borsi, CEO Florian Kall and CSO Lutz Nehrhoff von Holderberg have a very clear plan for the further development of their product, production upscaling and the commercialisation strategy. The initially addressed ambient lighting, digital signage and LED display markets show a huge potential. The global ambient lighting market with a revenue of 46 billion US$ in 2016 is expected to grow by 10.71% (CAGR 2017–2023). The LED display market generates nearly 3 bn€ and a growth of 20% in Europe due to more and more applications in retail and reduced production costs and market penetration of LED technologies.
With a Total Available Market for Digital Wallpaper growing from of 8.7 million m² (2017) to 12.2 million m² in 2024, LightnTec is confident to reach a market share of 17% of the defined SAM with 71,940 m² in 2024. Through sales, rental, and after-sales services, LightnTec anticipates a turnover of 48M€, and an additional staff headcount of 85 employees in 2024.
