Truth-not-Trust

Project description

Promoting log security in digital systems

The practice of logging offers organisations insight into the state of their digital systems. In particular, logs are vital for discovering cyberattacks, which is why malicious actors usually manipulate logs to remove traces of their activity. The market currently lacks solutions for independently verifying whether logs have been tampered with by malicious insiders or outside attackers. To bridge this gap, the EU-funded TNT project proposes a breakthrough solution for log security in global markets. The technology will enable massive-scale automated and independent log integrity assurance, provide real-time log integrity checks and long-term log record validity, make any log data immutable and detect currently hidden log manipulations. TNT will make it possible for organisations to mitigate cyber incidents.

Objective

Logging is a universal and industry-agnostic practice, and organizations across diverse sectors are becoming increasingly vigilant about log security. Logs are the core sources for insights into the state of digital systems and are central to discovering cyber attacks. Thus, malicious actors commonly remove traces of their activities by manipulating logs.
To date, the market is missing solutions that can independently monitor and verify that the logs have not been tampered with by malicious insiders or outside attackers. Without confidence in the integrity of logs, organizations are unable to mitigate cyber incidents in time as they have zero or very limited situational awareness of the occurrence and scope of cyber incidents.
Guardtime AS, a pioneer in hash-based cryptography and production-grade blockchain technology implementation, has developed a breakthrough solution for log security - TrueTrail (TT).
TrueTrail provides immutability and independent log verification, leveraging our proprietary blockchain technology for a decentralized trust anchor. Thereby we will bring into the market a fundamentally new approach to log security, which:
• enables massive scale automated and independent log integrity assurance;
• provides real-time log integrity checks and long-term log record validity;
• makes any log data immutable and detects currently hidden log manipulations.
We have piloted the solution and validated the value proposition with large-scale piloting with several governmental institutions as well as gained first customers from the finance sector. By completing the TNT project we can launch TrueTrail to global markets, implement a highly scalable business model, significantly shorten the sales and implementation cycles, and target new customer segments. Moreover, the SMEI funding will allow us to achieve commercial independence and technological freedom.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
