Periodic Reporting for period 2 - BATTERY PLUS (High performing batteries for accelerated uptake of hybrid and electric vehicles) Reporting period: 2020-12-01 to 2022-05-31 Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project Electric mobility has come to stay. Boosted by the threat posed by climate change and the established emission protocols, as well as by the high dependency on fossil fuels, electric and hybrid vehicles (H&EV) have appeared to be one of the keys of the mobility of tomorrow. Congestion already stifles the global economy an estimated 2% of GDP, and air pollution causes in excess of 7 million deaths per year as a result of air pollution exposure.Finding a better battery is crucial to the green energy revolution.Nevertheless, current battery developments have been primarily focused on cars, targeting big manufacturers under long-delivery times, underserving market demands towards new mobility options. There is a trend underpinned by:-(I) EU Transport goals to reduce C02 emissions from cars, (II) New mobility patterns demanding more flexible, accessible and affordable transport and (III) Increasing urban densities and traffic congestions as >68% of world population will be living in high-density urban areas by 2050 (UN)- that are expected to contribute towards a massive spread out to other vehicles used in urban and inner cities such as Light Electric Vehicles–LEVs (e.g.motorcycles) and Heavy Duty Electric Vehicles– HDEVs(e.g. buses). So far, there are still crucial customer pain points depending on battery technology that must be overcome.Electric vehicles may stall without a battery revolution and LEVs and HDEVs cannot be left behind.After the project we now have two outstanding market ready battery solutions that will allow our internationalization and scale up. With our technology, with our own production and with certifications and homologations. flexiEBUST is the first high voltage battery pack manufactured developed and manufactured in Spain with UN/ECE-R100rev2 certification and flexiFIVEL is the first battery solution of its kind with this automotive certification. Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far MILLOR BATTERY is ready to reinvent the market of electric vehicles by introducing unique fast charging high performing battery solutions for LEVs (FIVEL line, click on the name) and HDEVs (EBUST line, click on the name) with higher energy density (leading to more range), with the most accurate battery State of Charge (SoC) monitoring system (reducing range anxiety and enlarging the battery life) and light weight construction (improving manoeuvrability in LEVs and more weight capacity– people/goods in HDEVs). We have developed the revolutionary concept of Fast Maintenance Safety Box, including the most sensible battery elements, among them a part of BMS causing 85% of battery failures. Our battery solutions are not only bringing breakthrough improvements from the technological point of view but also in terms of sustainability (MILLOR batteries are designed to be directly reusable for 2nd life applications) as well as people’s safety. They include a proprietary high voltage monitoring device to know if the battery has voltage when performing maintenance activities, ensuring the safety of operators. These features together with the accurate monitoring system will radically reduce batteries Total Cost of Ownership. The use of an App for remote battery monitoring, decision support & predictive maintenance, which is new in this application area, complements our batteries & enhances market uptake.We have manufactured flexiEBUST and flexiFIVEL prototypes for validation and for demonstration purposes with potential customers that tested them in real conditions. This served as validation and demonstration activities very useful for our market uptake.During this period, we successfully certified both battery solutions. We also industrialized the product in our own factory in Barcelona and prepared the industrialization scale-up for the next years.Apart from the more technical work we also updated our commercialization and marketing plan including a internationalization plan. Added to this we did more than 20 demonstration activities and enlarged our dissemination and communication actions. Also during the last year we updated our IPR strategy and made sure that we keep our freedom to operate correctly. Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far) MILLOR BATTERY has been driving since 2015 the next step change in battery solutions applied to electric mobility. After an initial phase validating the technology and commercialising prototype beta batteries for singular projects at national level with exceptionally successful results (from beta batteries sales, engineering activity and highly positive market feedback and feasibility analysis) we are now focusing on fully exploiting the business opportunity to target the underserved wider professional markets of heavy duty and light electric vehicles.We follow a B2B model, our target customers are HD&LEV manufacturers. Next steps are manufacturing scale-up, finalise regulatory compliance, pre-commercial actions. BATTERY+ will accelerate our growth phase and accessing new geographical markets, primarily in EU and later on international markets (USA, Canada and LATAM). The project will position EU at the forefront of the electric-vehicle development race, arming LEV/HDEV vehicles with the best batteries in sight.
