INTEGRATED EU STRATEGY, SERVICES AND INTERNATIONAL COORDINATION ACTIVITIES FOR THE PROMOTION OF COMPETITIVE AND SUSTAINABLE NANOFABRICATION INDUSTRY

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - SUSNANOFAB (INTEGRATED EU STRATEGY, SERVICES AND INTERNATIONAL COORDINATION ACTIVITIES FOR THE PROMOTION OF COMPETITIVE AND SUSTAINABLE NANOFABRICATION INDUSTRY)

Reporting period: 2021-03-01 to 2022-02-28

SUSNANOFAB project tackles all technological and non-technological issues of nanofabrication along the whole value chain, facilitating interactions among the stakeholders.
The global target of the SUSNANOFAB project is to put in place a long term, integrated, and concerted action on nanofabrication. This Coordination Action will contribute to tackle all the pre-commercial conditions to upscale nanofabrication technologies and integrate them into complex systems able to manufacture industrially relevant products with high social, environmental, and economic impact.
The project is based on three main objectives:
• Involvement of policy makers, researchers, industrial stakeholders, and users (i.e. not only consumers but also industrial users applying nanoscale building blocks in SUSNANOFAB target sectors) in coordination groups of experts and co-creations sessions dedicated to the identification, prioritisation, and validation of a list of target products on which focusing strategic road mapping activities.
• Including in the SUSNANOFAB roadmap future actions aimed at solving cross-cutting challenges hindering nanomanufacturing upscaling and integration, including technological and non-technological aspects (e.g. environmental sustainability and health, education, standardisation etc.).
• Connecting providers of nanofabrication technologies, facilities, and services (i.e. technology donors) with potential users (i.e. technology customers), through a comprehensive set of brokerage services, through the SUSNANOFAB digital platform and large networking events and training services.
In the first reporting period, several activities contributed to the roadmap building up and development, starting from the definition of the target products, challenges, needs, initiatives and infrastructures (Mapping of the nanofabrication ecosystem – WP2) up to the involvement in the project of more than 40 experts with different background in nanotechnologies.
The first coordination group meeting with the experts was aimed at collecting inputs from them. It was organized and took place in December 2020 (Roadmapping and International Cooperation – WP3). Meanwhile, the SUSNANOFAB digital platform was developed considering all the inputs collected by a survey among the potential end-users of the platform. Networking activities were started and the main aspects concerning the stakeholder engagement, the online meeting venue, and the meeting organization were defined. The First Networking event is foreseen in April 2021. Lastly, in the framework of the WP4, after the collection of the training needs, training services were started, the first workshops are foreseen in March 2021.
During the second reporting period, the draft SUSNANOFAB roadmap, an integrated EU strategy for a competitive and sustainable nanofabrication industry, was drafted and released (Roadmapping and International Cooperation – WP3), with the direct involvement of the experts in its development. The organization of the second and third Coordination Group meetings supported Roadmap consolidation through the collection of experts opinion and the collaborative review of the Roadmap Actions.
The SUSNANOFAB digital platform was set-up and become available for all the stakeholders. Via this platform, the stakeholders will have access to the main outcomes of nanofabrication ecosystem mapping activities, training and brokerage services and to nanofabrication best practices. Four out of six training sessions have been organized considering the needs of the stakeholders, the educational gaps, and the services most expected from an industrial viewpoint, reaching a total of 100 persons trained so far from 11 different nationalities.
The objective of the final project period will consist of the delivery of the complete SUSNANOFAB roadmap, an integrated EU strategy for a competitive and sustainable nanofabrication industry, agreed and consolidated through the direct involvement of the experts in its development.
The SUSNANOFAB digital platform will be finalized and shared among all the stakeholders. Via this platform, the stakeholders will have the access to nanofabrication best practices, the main outcomes of nanofabrication ecosystem mapping activities ,and brokerage services. Training sessions on project-related topics will be organized, and efforts will be devoted to maximise Dissemination and Communication, Networking and stakeholder engagement, as well as Exploitation and Business Plan for Platform Sustainability in the long term.
