Project description
Intelligent ultraviolet filters for enhanced sun protection
Between 65 % and 95 % of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure and a history of sunburn. Current sunscreens degrade quickly as they absorb radiation since they can't adjust to the radiation dose that reaches the skin. In addition, existing filters need to be combined with other ultraviolet filters to create adequate sun protection. These filter combinations ultimately destroy coral reefs. To address these issues, the EU-funded SMART UV project has developed intelligent ultraviolet filters that are activated by a minimal dose of harmless radiation. The novel filters respond to high doses of radiation and provide all-day sun protection without needing to be combined with other filters. This technology will provide protection against skin cancer while causing less environmental damage.
Objective
3 million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year, of which about 65% to 95% of cases are related to sun exposure and a history of sunburn. Prevention tools are shade, clothes, hats and sunscreens.
Ultraviolet (UV) filters are the sunscreens active ingredients that absorb the radiation. There is no fixed time that we can be exposed to the sun without developing sunburn, it depends on the irradiation to which we are being subjected, which varies according to the time of day, latitude, season and the activity that is being done.
Existing sunscreens do not adjust to the radiation dose that reaches the skin; they degrade quickly as they absorb more radiation, therefore offering less protection during a given exposure time. In addition, none of the existing filters can generate enough protection alone in one formulation; they must be formulated in combination with other UV filters to produce reach the sun protection factor (SPF).These combinations produce compounds that are responsible for the discoloration and subsequent death of corals.
Roka Furadada (Roka) has developed SMART UV, intelligent UV filters that are activated by a minimal dose of harmless radiation and are able to respond to high doses of radiation while maintaining protection over long periods of time. SMART UV offers all day, sun protection of SPF 30, without the need to be combined with other filters. SMART UV filters produce significantly less environmental damage.
SMART UV: Better for human health, better for the environment.
Sales volume of UV filters will reach over 50,000 tons and will be equivalent to a turnover of 1,815 billion euros, with a growth of 3.1% of CAGR by 2022.
