Carbon Offset Plug-in

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - COPI (Carbon Offset Plug-in)

Période du rapport: 2020-01-01 au 2020-06-30

The majority of people across the globe identify climate change as the greatest threat to their personal safety (61% according to the Pew Research Center), yet few individuals take action to curb their impact on the environment. As the UN IPCC has stated repeatedly, this is precisely what must happen – every man, woman and child must take immediate action on climate change.

It is increasingly important to have innovations like Carbon Checkout’s (CC) Carbon Offset Plug-in (COPI) because the climate crisis must be addressed from all angles - governments must legislate, businesses must innovate, and individuals must take collective action. COPI’s approach enables the individual to be a part of the solution in their daily activities.

Carbon offsets can be leveraged as a convenient and effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The challenge with the current voluntary market, is that it is not widely accessible to individuals, as evidenced by the fact that individual contributions account for a mere 1.9% of the offset market. CC sees tremendous growth opportunities in the individual and small business sectors – creating greater access to a scalable eCommerce solution.
Our primary activities included product mapping and development to build and integrate several technical components to better assess the added value of COPI in the eCommerce shopping experience. These technical integrations generated an analytics feed, enabling us to collect and analyze data and validate consumer willingness to internalize the environmental costs of consumer purchasing.
Given our validated metrics from extensive collaborations with thousands of eCommerce merchants, we see significant growth opportunities over the next five years, with wider societal implications. Our projected growth based on the metrics obtained from the feasibility study, puts us on a trajectory to offset over 36.7 million metric tons CO2-e emissions per year by 2025. This is equivalent to removing 8 million passenger cars from the road each year, or taking 9 coal-fired power plants offline each year.

Carbon Checkout will continue its journey following this momentous opportunity afforded by the European Commission and the European Innovation Council. We carry forward our passion for our cause, with a validated business and social impact model – one that will accelerate Carbon Checkout as a beacon for sustainable innovation in a rapidly changing global economy.
