Managing iron salts addition to urban wastewater systems

The addition of iron salts to urban wastewater systems (UWS) has a number of benefits. It helps prevent corrosion and controls odour in sewers. It also maximises phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment bioreactors and hydrogen sulphide removal from biogas in anaerobic digesters. However, these processes are manipulated separately towards subsystems. An integrated management strategy would result in plant- or system-wide optimisation with huge economic and environmental benefits. With these challenges in mind, the EU-funded OPTIUWS project aims to explore a unified UWS platform and design advanced control methodologies for system-wide iron salts addition management. The project’s results will help to meet the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive.
