The European building sector is crucial to achieving the EU’s climate neutrality goals, yet the rate of deep renovations remains well below the annual target of 3% needed to fulfil the ambitions of the Green Deal and the Renovation Wave. Current practices are fragmented, costly and time-consuming, presenting a century-long challenge to the large-scale decarbonisation of the EU building stock.
RINNO aims to address this issue by developing and validating an augmented intelligence framework that significantly improves the speed, quality and cost-effectiveness of deep renovations across Europe. The project combines technological, digital and socio-economic innovations to streamline the entire renovation lifecycle (from planning and design to implementation and post-renovation monitoring) while ensuring that renovations are affordable and cause minimal disruption to daily life, enhancing occupant satisfaction.
The RINNO project aims to accelerate the rate at which the European building stock undergoes deep energy renovation, with the goal of achieving an annual renovation rate of 3.5%. The project seeks to reduce renovation costs and time by over 30%, improve energy performance by more than 65%, and demonstrate replicable, user-centred, data-driven renovation models. To this end, the project has developed a suite of 15 integrated IT tools and nine innovative technologies to support every stage of the renovation process, from planning and design to implementation, operation and monitoring. These tools and technologies need to be demonstrated at four pilot sites in France, Greece, Denmark and Poland, which represent a variety of climatic, regulatory and market contexts.
Renovation works have been successfully completed at the French, Greek and Danish demonstration sites, where RINNO technologies and tools were implemented and evaluated. Unfortunately, despite completing all the preparatory steps (including energy audits, renovation design, cost estimation, tender documentation and permits) the Polish demonstration site was unable to proceed with the physical renovation works. This was due to repeated tender failures, with bids received exceeding the available municipal budget. Nevertheless, the site successfully implemented the monitoring framework, establishing a robust baseline dataset that will be valuable for future replication and performance comparison.

The main objectives of the project during this third reporting period have been:
- WP1 "RINNO Augmented Intelligence Renovation Framework", finalise the RINNO architectural framework, ensuring consistency between technical developments and pilot requirements. Support integration activities and provide input for the assessment of KPIs and the preparation of demonstrations.
- WP2 "RINNO Innovation Repository of Building Technologies/Solutions for Deep Renovation", complete the development and certification of innovative RINNO technologies, including modular envelopes, renewable energy systems (RES), storage solutions and hybrid systems and prepare them for large-scale deployment at pilot sites.
- WP3 "RINNO Toolkits for Improving the Building Renovation Planning & Design Phase", finalise and validate all digital tools and integrate them into the RINNO Suite for demonstration and user testing.
- WP4 "RINNO Retrofitting Process Improvements", finalise and validate all digital tools and integrate them into the RINNO Suite for demonstration and user testing. Refine and validate the Retrofitting Process Manager and associated AR-based training and monitoring tools. Support on-site implementation and process optimization during pilot renovation works.
- WP5 "RINNO Operational Platform with Augmented Intelligence", finalise and validate all digital tools and integrate them into the RINNO Suite. Integrate into the platform the IoT-based monitoring, performance dashboard, marketplace and blockchain-enabled smart contracts. Ensure interconnection between all digital modules for real-time data exchange.
- WP6 "Integration, Demonstration, Evaluation & Replication Potential", coordinate the integration of RINNO technologies and digital tools, support the completion of renovation works in the French, Greek and Danish pilot sites, finalise the evaluation report of project impacts for RINNO pilot sites and prepare the replicability analysis.
- WP7 "RINNO Impact Assessment, Business Model & Service Innovation", refine and validate advanced business and financial models, including circular economy approaches and the crowd-lending scheme and prepare guidelines for market uptake.
- WP8 "Dissemination, Exploitation, Promotion & Knowledge Transfer", maximise visibility and exploitation of project outcomes through targeted communication activities, participation in EU events, publication of results and the preparation of the final Exploitation Report and RINNO Position Paper.
- WP9 "Project Management", coordinate the closure of all technical and administrative activities, ensure quality and risk management, finalise financial and technical reporting and coordinate the consortium for the final review meeting.

RINNO goes beyond state of the art by delivering and developing a single, augmented, intelligence-enabled framework for deep renovation. This framework supports every stage of the renovation process, from planning and design to implementation, monitoring and financing. In contrast, traditional renovation processes are fragmented and costly.
Progress beyond the state of the art includes the development of 15 integrated IT tools forming the RINNO Suite. The platform comprises three sections: (1) the RINNO Planning and Design Assistant, which includes the Digital Twin tool, the INTEMA building tool, the VERIFY tool, the TEA tool and the Renovation Scenario DSS, the Job Scheduling Optimizer and the Social LCA tool; (2) the RINNO Retrofitting Manager, which includes a recommendation tool, a process optimisation tool, a retrofitting scheduling component, an on-site monitoring component (E-cockpit), an AR/VR tool and a logistics platform (E-logistics tool); and (3) the RINNO Building Lifecycle Renovation Manager, which includes a Renovation Roadmap, a Building Logbook, a Marketplace, a Social LCA tool and Online Contracts and Middleware.
Moreover, nine innovative technologies have been demonstrated within RINNO at three different demonstration sites (French, Greek, Danish). These include bio-based double-layer panels, bio-based pipes and sheets, Isocell cellulose insulation, thermochromic glass, climate cover PV roof and façade solutions, the MicroVent sustainable ventilation system, the K-BOX bio-based insulating system for energy system components, building-integrated photovoltaic glass and decentralised domestic hot water systems.
