Project description
A closer look and salt and drought stresses
Nearly every aspect of plant physiology and metabolism is impacted by salt and drought stresses. Water scarcity and high salinity are two major factors limiting the geographical locations suitable for growing crop and horticultural plants. They also, periodically, account for significant losses in plant productivity. The biosynthesis and delivery mechanisms of newly synthesised lipid species towards the appropriate subcellular membranes are key aspects of the drought and salt stress processes. What is the role of the complex SYT1/SYT5/CLB1 (Ca-dependent lipid binding protein 1)? The EU-funded PLISUS project will answer this question. To do so, the project will use a combination of mutant analysis, cellular biology, lipidomics and biochemical approaches.
Objective
Drought and salt stresses constitutes key factors influencing plant growth, development and crop productivity. A key aspect of the drought and salt stress processes is the biosynthesis and delivery mechanisms of the newly synthesized lipid species towards the appropriate subcellular membranes. Previous studies in Prof Botella´s lab (supervisor) have demonstrated that Arabidopsis SYT1 (Synaptotagmin 1) is an ER-PM (endoplasmic reticulum – plasma membrane) tether component essential for proper Ca2+-dependent stress tolerance. Recently, his group has reported a tethering complex SYT1/SYT5/CLB1 (Ca dependent lipid binding protein 1) which responds to environmental stresses. The research objective of this proposal is to determine the role of SYT1/SYT5/CLB1 complex has on lipid homeostasis related to drought and salt stresses at the cellular level, using a combination of mutant analysis, cellular biology, lipidomics and biochemical approaches. According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations), the findings in this project will have potential practical applications since water scarcity and high salinity are two major factors limiting the geographical locations suitable for growing crop and horticultural plants and periodically account for significant losses in plant productivity.
The researcher has wide experience in Plant Lipids. In recent years, he has successfully worked in two of the world´s leading groups for plant lipids research. The host research group is one of the world-leading groups in plant responses to abiotic stress research. This inter-disciplinary European Fellowship will exploit the complementary competencies and technologies available at the beneficiary to extend the competence of the applicant, particularly in protein-interaction techniques and management skills. This prestigious fellowship will definitely contribute to his career prospects, obtaining future positions and developing new research lines as an independent researcher.
