Adaptive management for improved ecosystem services
Climate change has a negative impact on forest-based ecosystems and consequently on the provision of ecosystem services. Researchers question whether this situation is worsened by non-sustainable forest management. As a result, a further understanding of whether adaptive forest management could reduce or aggravate climate change is crucial today. The EU-funded CLIMPRO project will assess how adaptive management influences forecasting of ecosystem services. It will focus on wood production, river overflow and climate change mitigation. The project aims to increase our knowledge about the role adaptive management can play in both cases of climate change mitigation and exacerbation while sustaining forest-based ecosystem services.
Objective
The overall objective of this study is to quantify how adaptive management can affect the provision of ecosystem services,
focusing on wood production, river runoff and climate change mitigation. The study will enhance our understanding of how
adaptive management can contribute to climate change mitigation or, on the contrary, may exacerbate climate change while
sustaining forest-based ecosystem services.
