Resumen del contexto y de los objetivos generales del proyecto

Sustainability and functionality are the main drivers of our today and future materials. Indeed, we are living a century of increased awareness on environmental impacts and in the same time the amplification of functional materials requirement to fulfil innovative designs of future multitasks objects. Scarcity of strategic metal resources is an additional global challenge facing many industries. Nanotechnology is identified as Key Enabling Technology (KET) for development and modernization of European industries. Designing at the nanoscale is a promising and challenging strategy to innovate new building-block materials with improved properties and functionalities.
FUNMAT project proposed by Dr. Azizi Samir My Ahmed Said and hosted at IMDEA- Spain and INPG-France, has set the exciting objective to build a new hybrid building blocks using a renewable nanomaterial and an elegant chemistry.
The contract of Samir Azizi has finished on the 30/11/2024.

The project successfully demonstrates feasibility of the proposed concept using nanocellulosic materials as starting materials to design innovative hybrids with possible control of the composition and structure to tailor properties with potential applications for energy, catalysis and electronics.
The nanocellulosic starting material offers different morphologies and the large possible metallic phases allow building of versality of new nanohybrids. The project demonstrates the feasibility of the concept using both nanocellulosic films and nanofibers suspensions. Using copper as target metal, FUNMAT project illustrate the idea of making films with surfaces behaving as copper metal while having less density and less copper. This concept of “same with less” is very promising for application where functionality is governed by surface properties. When applied to scarce metals, the concept could be an important cost driver and high industrial impact.
The project demonstrates also the case of bimetallic phase making new hybrids with high surface area and opening door to new applications in catalysis, energy and electronics.

FUNMAT project demonstrate the concepts of making new hybrid building-bloc nanomaterials using nanocellulose as starting material. Using this renewable nanomaterial has beneficial effect on the environment protection aspects. The produced innovative hybrids are a promising answer to increasing requirement of multifunctional materials with low environmental impacts. FUNMAT propose also a new strategy to manage scarcity of some metals by using this innovative nanocellulose based hybrids.
