Graphene-based adaptive thermal shields for satellites

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SmartIR (Graphene-based adaptive thermal shields for satellites)

Reporting period: 2020-02-01 to 2021-07-31

In this ERC-PoC project, we have developed a technology to control thermal radiation on-demand from satellite surfaces. Our technology relies on the unique electrically tuneable optical properties of graphene films. We have fabricated prototype devices enabling electrically tuneable infrared emissivity. These prototype devices have multispectral tunability which can improve thermal management of satellites in outer space by balancing the absorbed solar radiation and the internal heat generated by satellite electronics with the emitted infrared radiation. Maintaining this balance with passive optical components while a satellite orbits the Earth is a major design challenge, especially for small satellites. Our technology provides disruptive innovation overcoming the limitations of the existing thermal regulation systems and their power consumption saving satellite users more power budget and competitive advantage for commercial operation. We have performed optical and electrical tests of these prototype devices in ambient and vacuum conditions. We have developed scalable methods to grow large-area cost-effective graphene films and their integration with devices. We have commercialised these findings through a university spinoff company SmartIR Ltd. SmartIR Ltd has licenced the generated IPs from the university and secured additional funding to develop a commercial product. In addition to the activities for technology development, we have worked on a market feasibility study and engagement with main satellite manufacturer in Europe. We have developed a sound business plan with input from the satellite manufacturer. The spinoff company has attracted additional funding: (1) seed investment from the University of Manchester, 2. Grant for European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre, and 3. InnovateUK Smart Grant. This PoC project has enabled the commercialization of scientific discovery in ERC-CoG SmartGraphene project.
