Advanced Planning and Scheduling Software and Systems for Europe

Objectif

The objective of the PASSE working group is to examine and assess the results of the various ESPRIT and national projects addressing the topic of planning and scheduling. It will determine the strengths in this area and the remaining weaknesses so that a way forward can be elaborated.

The working group will discuss and devise new methodologies and define terms of reference for performance targets and yardsticks. A common framework will be realised for describing the progress made so that agreement can be achieved for the future direction as well as the exploitation of new software and systems technology developed within the evaluated projects.

The group's expertise ranges from software producer and systems integrator to systems user, and encompasses all the important disciplines necessary to reach its goal. Its members are already involved in several European and national projects concerning planning, scheduling and manufacturing control.

A range of activities is planned, including visits to projects to see demonstrations of results, workshops and a conference. Each project visit will be structured to provide an overview evaluation, demonstrated results evaluation, future direction evaluation, discussions, conclusions about the advantages and disadvantages of the approach taken and its possible exploitation potential.

Four workshops will be held to establish requirements. The resultant report will include recommendations for the faster take-up of technology and software as well as advice about possible future work that could be done to improve systems and support tools.

The planned open conference, which is scheduled for the latter part of the project, will be a forum for presentations of current ideas and working systems results, including work done outside of Europe, and also act as an opportunity for presenting the preliminary analysis of the working group.

The benefits that should stem from these activities include the early identification of the correct technology to satisfy dynamic planning, scheduling and manufacturing control requirements; the creation of opportunities for the faster take-up of new technology by the European manufacturing industry; the creation of better opportunities for exploiting individual project software components, methodologies and integration techniques; the early identification of new parts that could help bring about the next evolutionary step; stimulation of new ideas; and the creation of a framework of expertise and knowledge in planning and scheduling which will help to encourage the improvement of manufacturing performance overall.

A report, which will in the public domain, will be issued at the end of the project which will describe the state-of-the-art in Europe with regard to planning, scheduling and manufacturing control systems. The report will identify strengths and gaps and make suggestions for future improvement.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
