Objective
This proposal concerns the setting-up of the Environmental Information Centre in Cyprus, which will develop initiatives to promote education, awareness, information, and training on environmental issues for policy-makers, civil servants, engineers, and members of the public.
The project aims to enable the setting-up of an Environmental Information Centre in Cyprus. It is in line with Cyprus' attempts to promote the conservation of the natural and physical environment and the strong willingness from the Government to disseminate a sense of environmental awareness, across the board, among its population. It is also in line with the European Union's LIFE programme, which calls for the sharing of responsibility for environmental protection with an awareness-raising dimension.
By supporting the establishment of a centre specialising on environmental information in Cyprus, the European Union will benefit both, the local public and an international audience. One of the main objectives of this project is to support policy-makers, scientists, engineers, civil servants and others, in their efforts to establish environmental policies and various action programmes with regard to the environment. So far there are no such support nor suitable resources for environmental information in Cyprus. Members of the public will also be able to access information available at the Centre, which will thus contribute to the dissemination of environmental awareness in the country, a pre-condition for sustainable development.
