XHC-free precleaning for environmentally conscious coating processes: a solution for job-coaters

Objective

With the present project, a process will be demonstrated which enables small job-coaters, which make use of modern and environmentally conscious coating technologies to go completely without halogenated hydrocarbons (XHC) in the area of surface cleaning. As a result it is to expect, that the mentioned enterprises, which have until now not had an alternative to XHC, will change their cleaning technology to a less pollutive one.

To well known, but pollutive coating techniques like electroplating, an environmentally conscious alternative has more and more been generally accepted for tools, machining parts and consumer goods: the PVD-technique. Due to very high demands to a thorough precleaning of the workpiece surface, no cleaning techniques without XHC have until now been found. This is espcially true for the small job-coaters which are typical for this branch and which deal with a big variety of changing materials.

This project will demonstrate for these enterprises, that by the use of a universal, XHC-free cleaning technology, which has been developed by the beneficiary, together with a certain coating technology, which is less sensitive to residual contaminations, even in this field XHC can be completely be abandoned.

In the first project stage, well-defined experiments will be carried out to record all data necessary under ecological, economical and functional aspects. These data will be summarized and interpreted in an information paper.

This paper will be submitted to all european job-coaters, which have been found out by a data base inquiry. It will also be presented at the Hannover fair.

In the last stage of the project, all european enterprises interested can carry out experiments with the beneficiaries equipment by means of own problems and examples. Arising costs will partially be reimbursed to the amount of the funding (30%). The interested enterprises will thoroughly be advised in introducing this environmentally beneficial process in their own practical operation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
