Objective
- Establishment of a new drying process for printing inks by means of accelerated electons.
- No emission of solvents or their waste gas due to solvent free electron beam curable inks.
- Reduction of the energy consumption up to 90%.
The described project shall demonstrate the application of a new low energy electron beam processor (EBP) to cure thin coatings or printing inks in the graphic industry on a web offset line for production. The experience found on the EBP-prototype will be transferred to a production installation, which will be installed to a web offset production line of a big printery. The objective is to replace the conventional dryers step by step. There are two major points which led to this decision. On the one hand the electron beam curable inks are completely free of solvents. That means the problems around the emission of solvents or the emission of waste gas of the solvent purification do not occur. On the other hand the curing process with accelerated electrons has a much higher efficiency concerning energy. To reach the same drying performance at the same web speed only 10% of the energy of a conventional heat set dryer is necessary.
