The 'Los Arenales' programme

Objetivo

It intends the conservation and management of some of the most valuable wetlands, within their social and economic context. Our actions will be the following: optimum management of the water resources, environmental education, mature reserve design, integration in the European Network of Natural Parks, monitoring the aquifer and associated wetlands assessment for the management of the resources.

The Los Arenales groundwater discharge ecosystems include some of the most valuable wetlands in the EEC area (eg the most alkaline habitats in Western Europe). The requested LIFE programme intends the conservation and mangement of the most outsanding wetlands within their social and economic context. The actions that will be considered are:
- Optimum management of the water resources (irrigation, sewage);
- Environmental education of the local people in order they know the values and functions of the wetlands;

- Nature reserve design:
1) hyperalkaline habitats of the Coca-Olmedo area
2) regional groundwater discharge ecosystems of Aldeamayor-Boecillo
3) sandy alkaline wetlands in Medina del Campo
4) wetlands given arise by mixed local and regional flows in tordesillas and adjacent areas
5) large wetlands of the Arevalo core.

- Integration of the above-mentioned nature reserves in the European Network of Natural Parks (79/409 and 92-43 EEC directives);

- Monitoring of the aquifer and associated wetlands with remote sensing, GIS, and database techniques;

- Assessment for the management of the resources generated by local people and governments (tourism, craftship).
