Demonstration of an environmentally friendly integrated waste water effluents disposal and reuse systems

Objective

The aim of the project is to reuse the treated wastewate effluent, discharged from municipal waste water plant, in irrigation applications.

The results foreseen are:
- environmentally acceptable reuse of wastewater effluents
- extended forestation in a semi-arid area
- energy supply in a region with weak electricity infrastructure
- direct and indirect improvement of employment for local people.

This project exploits an integrated approach in order to use an environmentally acceptable manner to face wastewater plant effluents disposal and reuse in a semi-arid, touristic region in the Aegean Sea (Tragea/Naxos).

It is proposed that a sequence of actions comprising of water storage and post treatment, irrigation and purpose grown short rotation forestry for energy production should be followed.

The proposed approach is very flexible in terms of final reuse or wastewater since it successfully faces:

- the problem of wastewater plants effluent disposal
- the shortage of water in semi-arid regions and the presentation of natural resources
- the opportunities for the local societies in terms of income increase and employment improvement
- the provision of heat and electricity and (in future) fresh water in a region with weak energy/electricity/water supply intrastructure.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
