Objective
Development of ecotourism in the riparian ecosystem of Evrotas near Sparta. Rehabilitation and restoration of part of the riparian system, promotion of the natural beauty of the area and of the nearby archaeological sites. Development of an information centre for ecotourism in Laconia and of a recreational area for the town of Sparta.
This project concerns the development of infrastructure for ecotourism in Sparta and the establishment of an information centre for ecotourist activities in the prefecture of Laconia. The tasks comprise the development of an ecological park within the riparian ecosystem of Evrotas river, which today has suffered substantial destruction and degradation from authropogenic activities. The rehabilitation of the ecosystem involves in situ work of mapping and property registration, repossession of the recently illegally occupied land and performance of design studies for the rehabilitation and restoration of the area. Subsequently a number of restoration works will be carried out involving planting of endemic species, fencing, cleaning the ecosystem and the river bed, construction of ponds and ecological isles, construction of public facilities and promotion of the nearby archaeological sites. Finally, the project comprises the construction of an information centre equipped with audiovisual material and with special software providing information on the ecotouristic activities in the prefecture. As a result, the project combines the development of ecotourism with the salvation of the Evrotas riparian ecosystem and supplies the town of Sparta with a valuable recreational area.
