Application of innovative technologies, with a reduced environmental impact, in the tanning industries, based on the C02 use in the decalcination process

Objective

The aim of the project is to set-up, on a pilot basis, innovative tannering technologies and to apply them on a production plant operating with a traditional process, in order to allow the reduction of the environmental impact and mostly satisfy the law standards.

Italian tanning industry is mostly based on a big number of low-scale factories localized in 5-6 poles. The interested areas suffer a noticeable environmental impact, also where shared effluents depuration plants exist. In effect the biological and physical-chemical depuration used downstream the production cycle is not able to sufficiently cut-off the pollutants (among them there are chlorides, sulphates, COD); therefore it is necessary to modify the plant and part of the process and optimize the handling of the various effluents.

In the traditional process of chrome tannering (and partially in the vegetal tannering one, for the soakage only) there are process stages causing discharges containing variable quantitites of pollutants, that, at present, is possible to reduce using different raw materials and products, or innovative technologies in order to reduce the environmental impact. They are Soakage, Calcination/Dehairing, Decalcination, Degreasing, Chrome tannering and Currying.

It has been designed an ecological tannery which uses innovative technologies and causes a reduced environmental impact; the technical-economical analysis highlighted the feasibility of such tannery in front of the traditional ones as well. In order to realize a pilot plant from scratch would be anyway very expensive (about 8 MECU); so we propose to implement on an existing plant, as far as possible, innovative technologies and processes, which allows to utilize standard bases machinery and services and to limit the intervention, in form of buying appliances and other devices, only to those phases of the production cycle involved by the new proposed technologies.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
