Objective
The aim of this research is to design and test an integrated monitoring system capable of evulating and managing the risk involved in the industrial waste disposal activity in a controlled landfill and, with the results obtained and futher validations, to implement a permanent operating system to control the three main components of the surrounding environment: air, aquifer, soil.
Evaluation of environmental impact of industrial waste landfills and their interaction with surrounding environment, both during plant management and after the end of the activities, has become essential to the analysis of sites to be used for similar plants, as well as to control the effects of landfill activities and to define the correct safety criteria to be adopted. The aim of this research is to design and test an integrated monitoring system capable of evaluating and managing the risk involved in the industrial waste disposal activity in a controlled landfill and, with the results obtained and further validation, to implement a permanent operating system to control the three main components of the surrounding environment: air, aquifer, soil. The innovation of this research project is the application of existing models and their validation especially for surface emissions and the integration of the methods used to detect and monitor data, inside and outside landfills, with specific mathematical models, currently not homogeneous, to validate a global management method. This method would enable to manage the activity risk by evaluating, on a daily basis, the diffusion in the surrounding environment of the contaminants present in the wastes disposed of in the landfill and, in case of leachate in the acquifer, the predictive management of the remedial actions. The integrated system obtained is expected to enable the development of a tool which can also be used to assess risks and suitable treatment methods as well as safe waste disposal procedures to restore abandoned sites and contaminated areas and used by public authorities in charge of land control and conservation.
