Improving the water quality policies for the Polish and Kaliningrad parts of the Vistula Lagoon

Objective

The aim of the project is to develop a Management Support System.
The results foreseen are improved management tools, an increased awareness of the importance of regional cooperation and coordination of policies and actions, and of the need to integrate environmental concerns in the economic sector developments.

The Project will develop a Management Support System enabling the analysis of various water quality policies. The management system will link data on pollution sources with a water quality model using a Geographic Information system platform. The modelling system will focus on the main water quality problems of the lagoon i.e. organic pollution, eutrophication, hygienic and heavy metals pollution. Data collection and the model set up will be partly financed by Polish and Danish funded projects which were started at the beginning of 1994.

In workshops to be attended by regional authorities, local authorities and economic sectors, the management support system will be used in analysing regional and economic sector development plans and policies. Actual data and policies for the region will be used, and the action plans prepared in the Baltic Sea Environmental Programme under HELCOM will provide the background for the development of scenarios.
