Development and coordination of public awareness and environmental education activities in the Baltic Sea region

Objective

To coordinate and increase Public Awareness and Environmental Education in the Baltic Sea Region. This will be enhanced through Coalition Clean Baltic's coordinating role in the Helsinki Commission PITF PA&EE Working Group efforts to comply with the Baltic Sea Action Programme.

Public awareness and environmental education (PA&EE) has been selected as one of the six most important components for international environmental attention. More importantly, it is widely accepted as a crucial way to increase public acceptance and willingness to finance and support future environmental initiatives.

The specific project for which funding is requested consists of two elements. The first element is support for the HELCOM PITF PA&EE Working Group's internal coordination activities and its secretariat. This will greatly facilitate the process of acquiring future financial support for projects through insuring cross sectorial cooperation between regional NGOs, governments and financial institutions.

The second element asks for initial financing for specific PA&EE projects. These projects, chosen by the Working Group will represent the first internationally agreed upon efforts to address the PA&EE component of the Joint Action Programme. Until these projects begin to receive financing, the programme will not be fulfilling one of its 6 components and therefore can not be considered a success.
