3 in 1 process for treating wastewater sludge

Objetivo

A new 3 in 1 process which stabilises, disinfects, and removes metals from wastewater sludge has been tested at research level and patented. This proposal is to design, construct and evaluate the process at operational scale to prove its application to the problem of wastewater sludge disposal.

A new 3 in 1 process for treating wastewater sludge has been evaluated at research level by WRc and patented. The major benefit of the process for treatment of wastewater sludge is that in a single step it will achieve stabilisation, disinfection and substantial reduction in heavy metal content of the sludge. This results in a sludge of good quality particularly suitable for recycling disposal options and sustainable use on agricultural land. The Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC) will more than double the quantity of wastewater sludge requiring land disposal over the next 15 years so that the 3 in 1 process for treating wastewater sludge to provide a high quality product for disposal is particularly timely. This proposal is for a project to design, construct, commission and evaluate the process at operational scale to prove its application to the problem of wastewater sludge disposal.
