Integrated environmental enhancement of polluted sites programme, Cambuslang, Glasgow

Objective

To develop methodology for the greening and amelioration of polluted sites and project that methodology for use on other sites by model creation.

An existing heavily polluted steel works site will be covered by a growing medium of a mixture of colliery spoil and sewage sludge, innoculated with earthworms, soil invertebrates and fungal mycorrhiza. The whole will be planted with a mixture of amenity woodland/screening, short rotation coppice and cover crops for open spaces. The changes in the growing medium over time and in the drainage water from the site will be carefully monitored; any necesary change in management indicated by the monitoring programme will be carried out.

The data collected and the changes in the management regime will be used to create models and a decision support system for use in the management of similar sites.
