Deliverables

First year project highlights (opens in new window)

The deliverable will summarize the highlights of PASCAL activities and results during its first year in a format favouring public communication and dissemination in accordance with the general rules set by the PEDR

Report on Pb/LBE-JOG/clad interaction tests near clad melt temperature (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the results of Pb/LBE-JOG-clad interaction at severe accidental conditions (i.e., close to cladding melting temperature), by performing structural and chemical analyses on the samples, and comparing the results before and after the tests. Characterization of the samples will be performed by Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscope (FIB-SEM) and, wherever relevant, by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

HLM aerosol formation and transport: simulations (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the results of Pb/LBE aerosol formation and transport simulations by means of the GOTHIC containment code, as adapted by the inclusion of dedicated models built on the experimental results performed at SCK CEN. A subsequent study will be devoted then to the identification of the most influential sources of uncertainties.

Pre-test Analysis and FIV Test Matrix Definition (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the results of the pretest analysis of flowinduced vibrations as required in identifying the most appropriate experimental conditions thereby supporting the definition of the experimental tests matrix

Report on the release of fission products from {Pb/LBE+irradiated MOX fuel} using KEMS (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the results of Pb/LBE-MOX interaction in terms of fission products release as a function of temperature, on samples prepared in hot cells by mixing Pb/LBE with real samples of fast-reactor irradiated fuel. Analyses will be based on Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry (KEMS).

Report on the structural and thermodynamic characterization of the LBE/Pb interaction with JOG phases, and fission products with long term radiological impact (e.g. BaMoO4 and BaUO4) (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the interaction products between radionuclides with a potential long-term radiological impact (Ba, Sr, U, Pu, minor actinides) and Pb/LBE, characterizing the structural properties of the formed products by (i) X-ray diffraction, (ii) neutron diffraction at the PEARL beamline in Delft, and (iii) their thermal expansion will be investigated using high temperature X-ray diffraction. In addition (iv) X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements will be performed at synchrotron facilities for determining the oxidation state, a critical parameter for the chemistry of the interaction. Thermodynamic properties will be also characterized by (i) solution calorimetry and (ii) thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry.

Second year project highlights (opens in new window)

The deliverable will summarize the highlights of PASCAL activities and results during its second year in a format favouring public communication and dissemination in accordance with the general rules set by the PEDR

FIV First Experimental Test Report and Numerical Model Validation (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the results of the first flow-induced vibration experimental tests and how CFD simulations compare with the latter to the aim of calibrating the numerical model

FIV experiment on HELENA facility: experimental procedures and facility description (opens in new window)

Third year project highlights (opens in new window)

The deliverable will summarize the highlights of PASCAL activities and results during its third year in a format favouring public communication and dissemination in accordance with the general rules set by the PEDR

HLM aerosol formation and transport: experiments (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the results of Pb/LBE aerosol formation and transport experiments in a gas stream (i.e., transport rates as function of aerosol particles size), as generated either by controlled spark erosion or by evaporation/condensation.

The deliverable will report the data collected from literature and/or specifically retrieved from experiments performed within the Project, as required for the development of a CALPHAD model, as well as the results of the consequent simulation of the Pb/LBE-irradiated fuel system, notably in terms of the main constituents (heavy metals, Oxygen and key fission products).

Definition of the student mobility program (opens in new window)

The deliverable will define the program to establish handson training opportunities to students and young researchers as well as the topics for the first Focused Call and the criteria for the Calls for Excellence The deliverable will also report the members of the established judging commissions and the criteria that will be adopted to evaluate the candidates and proposals The deliverable will finally identify and set the means for maximizing the reaching of potentially interested candidates

Report on the release of fission products from {Pb/LBE+JOG mixture} using KEMS (opens in new window)

The deliverable will report the results of Pb/LBE-JOG interaction in terms of fission products release as a function of temperature, as mixtures of Pb/LBE and exactly defined amounts of relevant fission products (I, Cs, Te) and JOG compounds. Analyses will be based on Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry (KEMS).
