Project description
New compact device to accurately monitor pollution
Pollution data are necessary for the development of EU emission strategies. However, the ability to monitor each individual polluting gas requires analyses in separate, bulky and expensive instruments installed in fixed monitoring stations and operated by specialised staff. As a result, numerous financial, logistical and data restrictions emerge. The EU-funded Envirolas project proposes a compact instrument for advanced pollution monitoring based on direct laser spectroscopy that allows measurement of six pollutants and four greenhouse gases permanently, simultaneously and accurately. The instrument will be easily transportable due to its reduced dimensions and weight and will have 75 % reduced operational costs and 40 % lower start-up costs.
Objective
EU air monitoring authorities, industries and research centers struggle to acquire pollution data to develop concrete emission reduction strategies. To monitor each individual polluting gas, it is necessary to perform analyses in separate, bulky and expensive instruments, placed in fixed monitoring stations. These instruments face financial, logistical and data limitations, because they are expensive, not portable and require regular calibration and continuous operation by expert technical staff.
At MIRO Analytical Technologies we have developed EnviroLAS, the first all-in-one instrument for advanced pollution monitoring, allowing the measurement of 6 different pollutants (CO, O3, SO2, NO, NO2, NH3) and 4 greenhouse gases (H2O, CO2, CH4 and N2O) continuously, simultaneously and precisely through a light and easily transportable device based on direct laser absorption spectroscopy.
Our feasibility plan was developed under a Ph1 grant and now we seek an Accelerator grant to launch EnviroLAS into the market. During the project we plan to add key components to EnviroLAS hardware and upgrade our software and user interface. We will refine the present manufacturing process and define the industrial scale-up process, after performing external testing of EnviroLAS with early adopters. We will certify EnviroLAS in EU and US, and consolidate our exploitation plan, targeting all Europe by 2024 and expanding to US by 2026.
EnviroLAS will have 75% less operational costs, 40% lower startup costs, and reduced dimensions (60x50x15cm) and weight (25kg) compared to existing devices. It will address the urgent demand to monitor main air pollutants and greenhouse gases in-situ in a more cost-effective and dynamic way. The EC contribution is fundamental to scale-up our business and create 27 new jobs in our company by 2026, to address our clients’ needs.

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
