Pathways for professional engineers - computer based training for developing engineering professionals

Objective

OBJECTIVES
Today, rapid technological change, the contracting out of many activities to SMEs and the call for working in self-managed work teams have a significant influence on working conditions. Team work has become the essential building block for management activities in technical and engineering organisations, and the need to develop the engineering/technical skills of professionals who also possess managerial and interpersonal skills is now acknowledged. The project therefore proposes to provide a CD-ROM-based software tool focusing on the core areas of project management and information technology. It will also offer guidance in identifying further individual training needs and a plan of action with regard to training.

ACTIVITIES
The partners, consisting of employers, professional organisations and training providers, will produce the design specification for the above-mentioned CD-ROM. The CD-ROM prototype will be developed, and a manual will be produced. The product will then be translated into Swedish and Greek, and training will be provided in the use of the product.

PRODUCTS
- Creation of a CD-ROM which will evaluate the skills of the user in relation to a framework of skills in the areas of project management and information technology; which will map out a plan of action which will allow the user to acquire the skills aimed for, offer a selection of training material and programmes; and finally, which will provide assistance in consulting databases.
- User manual and workbook for recording progress.
