EU training programme for the future harbour and terminal workers

Objective

OBJECTIVES
The flow of goods into ports is becoming increasingly containerised and standardised. This standardisation directly influences the dockers' work which is now much more dependent on technical and mechanical knowledge than on physical strength. The dockers' job description has therefore radically changed and their level of qualification greatly increased. They have to use sophisticated techniques in handling goods and use new methods of communication. The project will firstly describe the new job description of these workers and will then develop a training module for them which can be validated across the countries of the EU.

ACTIVITIES
To begin with the partners analyse the level of qualifications required to be a docker in the various partner countries. They then focus on the existing training programmes. By bringing the first two stages together, a standard profile of the qualified docker emerges. A training module is set up for the docker. This module also includes courses on health, safety and environmental measures, flexible qualifications such as co-operative, flexible attitudes, etc. This module will be incorporated into wider training programmes and distributed across the EU. Together, the partners wish to develop audio-visual training tools.

PRODUCTS
Training modules for dockers which must be incorporated into wider vocational training programmes are set up, together with audio-visual training tools.
