100% Renewable Energies for Energy Intensive Industries

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - RE4Industry (100% Renewable Energies for Energy Intensive Industries)

Période du rapport: 2022-03-01 au 2023-08-31

The EU has started a progressive decarbonisation path with the aim to become carbon neutral by 2050. The Energy Intensive Industries (EII) are expected to play an important role as they represent 24% of the final energy consumption, and the gradual implementation of RE technologies at EIIs must allow the reduction of emissions up to a 100 % in 2050 according to most of public decarbonization industrial roadmaps. This will be achieved by increasing the share of RE in 3.15 % annually in these sectors, from 2030-2050. EIIs are expected to play a key role as greater RE consumers. This will be translated into new jobs creation (ca. 8000– direct and indirect).
One of the main impacts of RE4Industry is to achieve emissions savings around 340 and 950 Mt CO2 eq, by 2030 and 75% by 2050, respectively. RE4Industry approaches the EIIs decarbonization from a social perspective, to fully understand the social perception and acceptance, aligning the general EU citizen acceptance and acknowledgement of EIIs as REs promoters. RE4Industry project has 2 main purposes: to support EII in the identification and integration of renewable energy (RE) solutions, together with the definition of Action Plans for decarbonization; and to transform the EU industrial landscape into a large market niche for the uptake of RE while defining the appropriate framework conditions for short-and long-term scenarios., this two-fold objective is being addressed through eight partial objectives compiled in Part B
1. A tailored multi-actor strategy is achieved. Specific engagement actions have been put in operation at national (DE, ES, GR, NL) and EU-level. An expert panel has been created with 4 National Cluster and Committees, 4 European Expert Groups and one European Committee. Overall, around 100 actors collaborate with the project.
2. Renewable solutions for facing the industrial decarbonisation have been Assessed and reported. Short-term available technologies have been addressed in terms of renewable heat and power generation. As a result, a total of 10 reports have been prepared. Regarding long-term, the analysis of technologies has been mainly focused on defining a clear structure to establish a technology roadmap for less mature technologies. The assessment of renewables has been used to steer the discussion with expert panels.
3. Analysis of industrial sectors at EU level and national level. Reports at the EU level on the following sectors: ceramics, steel, glass, non-ferrous metals, cement & lime and chemicals & fertilizers. At National level, reports on the status of EIIs at DE, ES, GR and NL.
4. Successful cases of RE integration in different EIIs sectors wereidentified. The mapping tool has been launched. 10 identified success cases have shown their interest to collaborate with the project and reports have been prepared on how renewables or innovation technologies have been implemented at their industrial sites.
5. RE4Industry partners conducted detailed analysis once preliminary analysis in energy needs and decarbonization strategies were conducted. This has been done by technical and industrial partners in 3 working teams: CIRCE-SIDENOR (steel), CERTH-MYT (aluminum) and BTG-CORBION (chemical). The in-depth analysis focused on technologies or innovation measures chosen in agreement with the industrial partners to align their interest with that one of RE4Industry technical partners.
6. A dedicated Committee steered the communication to assure a coherent message in the various activities performed in RE4Industry. There have been 8 press releases, 11 scientific publications, conference participations, 4 general articles in national/ regional newspapers/ specialized magazines in addition to all the expert panels meetings and interviews to engage actors for WP2
RE4Industry collaborative network has grown to involve around 100 stakeholders from energy intensive industries (including, EIIs’ representatives, plant managers, policy makers, academics, etc.). The current national Clusters (4), Expert Groups (4) and Committees (4 National, 1 European), have been key to provide industrial vision and knowledge to enrich the project development. RE4Industry has provided direct recommendations and guidelines to engage policy makers at EU and national level with the objective of supporting the uptake of RE in the industries under their jurisdiction.
The EIIs Interactive Map has been updated with data from 2021 and will be updated in subsequent years after. Identified success cases of EIIs already deploying REs solutions are included in this tool. Reports of the status of EII sectors (i.e. ceramics, steel, glass, non-ferrous metals, cement & lime and chemicals & fertilizers) behave been released on the project webpage together with additional reports on the status at the national level of EIIs in DE, ES, GR and NL.
After establishing a clear baseline analysis methodology and identifying the most suitable REs solutions for the cases studies, a further detailed assessment has been conducted, and Action Plans have been provided to SIDENOR, CORBION and MYT to enhance their decarbonisation pathway and lessons-learned.
RE4Industry has transferred the RE solutions developed by the project to other companies and case studies in different sectors and countries. Consortium has executed their knowledge transfer plans through different events, reaching out many stakeholders from various energy-intensive sectors,(cement, ceramics, chemicals, food and drink, glass, oil refining, and pulp and paper) and providing them with anaccompaniment based on the three action plans and the successful cases of RE integration in industrial processes. The project has also facilitated the exchange of best practices and lessons learned among the participants and other stakeholders.
Inputs from previous activities have been accompanied by knowledge transfer actions, both in-house transfer in the industrial groups of SIDENOR, MYT and CORBION, so as sectoral transfer seminars organised in 4 additional countries (at, FI, HR and RO). Also, communication and dissemination actions kept on being key for the correct project development.
RE4Industry has helped three energy-intensive sectors (aluminium, steel, and chemicals) to use more renewable energy technologies and alternative fuels by hadling them customized information, guidance, and support, estimating that the renewable energy share in the case studies could reach 37% by 2030, reducing CO2 emissions and pollutants. The project has also analysed the technical, economic, environmental, and social aspects of using biomethane and clean hydrogen as alternative fuels, and has evaluated how the stakeholders and the public perceive and accept them. It has provided useful tools and materials for the case studies to assess their energy consumption and emissions, and to plan their decarbonization road map.
RE4Industry has set the minimum requisites for low-carbon manufacturing of EII products in cement, steel, and other sectors, and has shared their view on the sustainable products initiative through sectorial organisations, EIIs and policy makers to match the requisites and the view with their needs and expectations. RE4Industry partners have got positive feedback and acceptance from sectors, as they saw the benefits and impacts of adopting them for their decarbonisation actions and for the EU climate goals.
