Project description
Renewable energy and organic fertilisers from animal manure
Agriculture has a major impact on the natural environment. EU agriculture contributes to around 10 % of all human induced greenhouse gas emissions, the majority coming from livestock farming. The EU alone produces around 1.4 billion tonnes of manure per year, but only 10 % is processed. Most livestock smallholdings, which constitute around 80 % of all farms in the EU, have limited access to reliable and affordable solutions for managing animal waste in a sustainable and cost-effective way. The EU-funded SUSTAINABLEFARM project will address this challenge by enhancing a small-scale, off-grid, integrated, affordable, modular and scalable waste-to-energy platform for converting manure into biogas and organic fertiliser locally, thereby reducing the environmental impacts of livestock farming.
