Strategic and targeted support to incentivise talented newcomers to NMP projects under Horizon Europe

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - FIT-4-NMP (Strategic and targeted support to incentivise talented newcomers to NMP projects under Horizon Europe)

Período documentado: 2022-07-01 hasta 2023-12-31

FIT-4-NMP’s overall objective was to increase the participation of talented newcomers from underrepresented regions in NMP projects in Horizon Europe, as compared to Horizon 2020. Talented newcomers are promising innovation organisations – especially SMEs – that have not participated in H2020 NMP. Meanwhile, underrepresented regions are regions in EU-13, EU-15 and Associated Countries with a low participation in H2020 NMBP. The increase in participation of the talented newcomers was brought about by connecting them with NMP hotspots, where important NMP innovations are demonstrated, as well as networking them with NMP Top Innovators. FIT-4-NMP took strategic and targeted approaches to achieve this overall objective.

To achieve FIT-4-NMP’s overall objective, the consortium implemented an ambitious Action Plan comprised of the following Action Steps:

Action Step 1: Map talented newcomers to NMP groups and NMP Top Innovators (via WP1)
Action Step 2: Organise workshops and proposals between talented newcomers and NMP Top Innovators (via WP2)
Action Step 3: Provide training and hands-on support to talented newcomers (via WP3)
Action Step 4: Survey challenges facing newcomers and formulate recommendations for stakeholders (via WP4)
Action Step 5: Promote talented newcomers and disseminate project (via WP5)
WP1 Mapping

o Identified and making contactable 189 talented newcomers (including 69 SMEs) from 27 countries and 54 regions via the FIT-4-NMP register;
o Identified over 150 NMP Top Innovators from across Europe and displayed and made them contactable via the FIT-4-NMP interactive map;
o Prepared and published the Report on Underrepresented Regions and Talented Newcomers in H2020 Research (deliverable D1.1) which has been viewed 159 times and downloaded 14 times from the FIT-4-NMP website;
o Prepared and published the Report on Europe’s Leading Research and Innovation Organisations in Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials and New Manufacturing Processes (NMP) (deliverable D1.2) which has been viewed 774 times and downloaded 105 times from the FIT-4-NMP website.

WP2 Innovation Workshops

o Provided hands-on support to talented newcomers to participate in 25 RIA/IA proposals submitted to Pillar 2/Cluster 4/5, EIC Accelerator, and Hop-On Facility calls with 12 successful;
o Organised 6 Innovation Workshops with NMP Top Innovators attended by 64 talented newcomers;
o Raised awareness among talented newcomers and coordinators about the Hop-On Facility and put in place a process to systematically review Hop-On Facility opportunities.

WP3 Training

o Supported talented newcomers to participate in 39 proposals for EC calls other than RIA/IA (e.g. Widening Twinning CSA) with 16 successful;
o Delivered three online trainings for EC calls other than RIA/IA (Twinning, EIC Accelerator, M-ERA.NET) which attracted a total of 278 participants;
o Organised six technology-transfer trainings to a combined audience of 165 talented newcomers;
o Promoted two online trainings for EC calls other than RIA/IA (MSCA-DN, MSCA-PF) delivered by the Research Council of Lithuania, Latvian Council of Science and Estonian Research Council;
o Promoted three online trainings from the European Patent Office (EPO) to FIT-4-NMP members;
o Supported the submission of 43 business offers by talented newcomers to the EEN database;
o Supported the publication of 155 offers of expertise for the RESILIENCE and TWIN-TRANSITION 2021 and 2022 calls by 12 talented newcomers.

WP4 Surveying

o Ran an online survey on the challenges limiting the participation of newcomers in NMP projects completed by 128 respondents from 26 countries (EU-13: 84 respondents; EU-15: 13 respondents; Associated Countries: 31 respondents). 93 of the survey respondents were newcomers and the remaining 35 were policy makers;
o Prepared and published the Survey on the Challenges Limiting the Participation of Talented Newcomers in EU Projects in Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials and New Manufacturing Processes (NMP) (deliverable D4.1) which has been viewed 839 times and downloaded 92 times from the FIT-4-NMP website;
o Prepared and published the Report on How to Increase the Participation of Talented Newcomers in Horizon Europe NMP projects (deliverable D4.2) which has been viewed 1083 times and downloaded 106 times from the FIT-4-NMP website;
o Held an online innovation policy event – involving speakers from the EC and EU member states - to communicate the findings of the two reports (D4.1 and D4.2) which attracted nearly 100 participants.

WP5 Promotion and Dissemination

o Awarded 106 travel grants to talented newcomers from 16 different underrepresented countries;
o Promoted talented newcomers at 8 EC networking events, including EuroNanoForum 2021 and 2023;
o Promoted talented newcomers at 26 networking events in underrepresented regions;
o Attracted over 180 participants to the FIT-4-NMP joint regional workshop for Ukrainian research community (online, 5 May 2022);
o Attracted 9216 unique visitors to visit the FIT-4-NMP website;
o Reached over 730 subscribers to the FIT-4-NMP e-newsletter.
The results of FIT-4-NMP contributed to achieving the following expected impacts:

Impact 1: Visibility of technology hotspots in the current NMP domains across the entire EU.
Impact 2: Increase of newcomers’ rate in projects funded under relevant intervention areas in “Horizon Europe” to at least 50% compared to 39% in 2018 under the NMBP work programme. A significant part thereof should be SMEs prepared to invest in innovation.
