Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Interactive modern lifestyles mean we touch more surfaces than ever before, thus exposing ourselves and our loved ones to a range of infectious germs or viruses. This has never been truer and with the onset of the Covid -19 pandemic, the need is even greater to protect our society and economy, both locally and globally, against the next outbreak when it arrives. Today we can’t always choose where we touch, but now, Kastus® offers a smarter choice for better protection.

Kastus® patented coating technology is sprayed onto glass or ceramic surfaces during manufacturing. The result is an enhanced surface that provides antimicrobial product protection. As light falls on the coated surface, it activates the unique Kastus® Intelligent Surface technology™. Once activated, this technology reacts with moisture in the air to form reactive oxygen species. These agents constantly attack and destroy the antimicrobials they encounter, leaving a protected surface. The solution is offered across multiple glass formats from touchscreens to devices to architectural glass.

The objectives are as follows:
• Develop an effective multifunctional coating.
• To expedite scale-up to meet market demand at this challenging time (Covid-19).
• To create an Irish and European company to create jobs, drive innovation and to compete globally.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Within the 24 month period of the project, we needed to make substantial changes to how we run the company to adapt to the impact of the pandemic. Through a process of global integration, via working remotely, we scaled up the formulation and then focused on our own products. Once passed validation, we began a stringent round of antimicrobial testing on our products.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Kastus coating technology is a robust barrier designed to prevent the spread of pathogens on products. Through rigorous testing, the antimicrobial and durability functionalities of the coating have been proved to be effective in challenging environments. Work is still ongoing to optimise the true potential of the technology and new applications are being introduced into the company with commercial partners willing to adopt the Kastus experience. The results generated are very promising and a dossier of antimicrobial testing continues to be built. With reference to the societal impact, a technology now exists which has added functionality to allow itself to address future societal challenges.

None of the above would have happened without the support from EU H2020 and thankfully we were able to employ more staff and accelerate the development of the technology and now we are in the process of commercialization.
