Objective
A report by the European Parliament quotes tourism as being "the largest sectoral industry in the Community's economy", representing approximately 6% of its GNP and approximately 7% of total employment. Tourism therefore plays a sizeable role in the EU, in terms of both its economic impact and its contribution towards reinforcing a sense of unity. This sector is, however, faced with qualitative change - technological progress (i.e. communications / telecommunications and transport), globalization of the world market, emergence of new tourism markets, growing competition, consumer demand for quality/content and the emergence of new career profiles. To meet these challenges, the partners propose to develop a quality concept applying to all levels in order to further a policy of sustained development of the tourism industry.
The project is based on a partnership between three countries with differing and complementary experience of tourism: France, Portugal and Austria. The strengths and know-how of these three locations could exemplify a "Destination of Excellence". The partners will design a training programme to prepare tourism professionals to achieve this concept of excellence. The partners, on the basis of key factors defined during a previous Leonardo project, will develop training modules supported by new technologies and adapted to the specific needs of the groups concerned.
Impact
Improved quality of tourism services in three European countries. Movement from a tourist dimension of Europe to a European dimension of tourism.
