Objective
In the past, environmental policy was based mainly on regulations and controls for achieving environmental objectives. The consequence was a rather passive and after-care type of environmental protection restricted to complying with regulations and statutes. The discussion surrounding "sustainable development" is focusing more and more attention on active, preventive environmental protection. Viewed against this background, the objective of the project is to help raise and adapt the level of qualifications of employees in companies at European level. In terms of content, the aim is to disseminate environmental technology and legal know-how on a wider scale, thus helping to improve the situation of the environment in the countries involved.
During the course of the project, environmental experts from the countries taking part, i.e. Germany, Spain, Sweden and Greece, intend to develop course modules for the further qualification of company environmental officials, revise and adapt existing concepts as well as draw up methodological approaches for the implementation of a distance-learning course for training "European Company Environmental Officials". Extending qualifications in environmental law and technology to include the European dimension would appear to be of considerable importance in view of prevailing business structures and implementation of the Single European Market. As development of the materials is to be preceded by all the participants first attending a seminar entitled "Development of self/distance-learning materials", the project also includes specific self-training elements. The products of the project will comprise different modules suitable for use as self/distance-learning packages. The materials will be supplemented by simulation programmes with tutorial supervision provided by the educational institutions involved. The documentation will be published in the five project languages.
Impact
The project makes a pan-European contribution towards developing content for a new job-profile in the environmental sector, promoting, in particular, the dissemination and application of self-learning materials.
