Objective
At present there is little competence-based training for laboratory workers in the pharmaceutical industry in Europe. People working in laboratories need access to flexible methods of training where employees do not spend long periods away from their place of work - there is an obvious need for more distance learning materials. There are three important issues covered by the project: the emergence of new processes in a growing industry, the emergence of the information superhighway as an opportunity to deliver training, and the convergence of smaller companies under one larger company. It will use the most up to date world wide web and multimedia software and expertise to develop and test training modules for laboratory workers. Co-operation between industrial, commercial producers and academic partners in the UK, Portugal, France and Ireland will provide a strong team.
In the UK, Ireland and Portugal a local co-ordinator will manage the curriculum design and training evaluation, working alongside nationally-based advisors. The project will be organised in eleven developmental phases including needs analysis, materials production, testing and evaluation, telematic support (using ISDN video conferencing and the Internet) and dissemination. The training materials and the findings of the project will be available on the Internet and will be distributed to companies in Europe on CD-Rom.
Impact
The impact of this project will be to provide a detailed evaluation of the use of multimedia and telematics training materials for a very specialised section of one industry.
